Things happen here. Things you can only dream of…

At Carrel Psychiatric Hospital the impossible has happened and keeps happening. Every hour the facility completely changes; only the patients remain the same. Combining hope, horror, health and hilarity In/Hospitable, a science fiction play by Out of Character Theatre Company, explores the tensions and challenges of mental health provision in 2018.

In/hospitable is the first part of the Fresh Visions series of science-fiction plays which explore the tensions and challenges of living with mental illness. Based on a series of workshops and interviews with clinicians, carers and those with in recovery this disorienting drama will take audiences into new worlds where facts can make inspiring fiction.

Out of Character is a creative and provocative theatre company whose members have all lived experience of mental illness. Their recent productions include Retail Therapy (York St John University), Disturbing Shakespeare (The University of Liverpool/Newcastle University/York Literature Festival) and in co-production with York Theatre Royal - More Tales From Kafka & Objects of Terror.
